Tan Sri Datuk P. Ramlee began a slow but interesting career in acting, and despite his being
actively involved in sports during his younger years, P. Ramlee started
to pile on some weight, which seemed to bring him much luck. Tan Sri Datuk P. Ramlee was discovered as a teenager when B.S. Rajhans (an Indian-born
director) was
impressed by his singing at a talent contest.
After seven years of acting, he became a director for the first time in
Penarek Beca the song he sang in his earlier talent show was featured in the film, the
plaintive romantic ode "Azizah," it was one of his most famous songs in the film. But this genre of movies created some
attention in the public, but this was not what that brought the golden era of the
Malay movie industry, but it was the comedy films that P. Ramlee truly excelled in as a director and an actor.

One of P. Ramlee's first comedy films that truly got the whole nation's attention was when he acted in his first comedy "Bujang Lapok". The trio which brought the success of "Bujang Lapok" includes P. Ramlee and his two partners, Aziz Sattar and S. Shamsuddin, all the three actors used their real names and portrayed lovable losers who don't have much luck with women or money. There were still a lot of viewers despite "Bujang Lapok" getting reruns for hundreds of times already on the national television channels even until today.
