Tan Sri Datuk P. Ramlee received his early education at the Sekolah Melayu
Kampung Jawa and the Sekolah Kebangsaan Francis Light in his primary schools.
Next, he ascended his studies to secondary level in Penang Free School until
the Second World War came his education stopped for a while. During the
Japanese occupation in Malaya, he studied at the School of the Japanese Navy he was made to enlist in a Japanese naval college in Penang.
It was
there that he learned to speak some Japanese and play the violin, and
also watched many Japanese moviesbefore returning back to Penang Free School when the war ended. During his time
at the Penang Free School Tan Sri Datuk P. Ramlee won first place in a song
competition organised by Penang Radio during that time he was only eighteen
years old.
